Applicants will be considered for a Drama placement at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts on the basis of an audition.

The audition

Will be conducted by a panel chaired by the Head Teacher Drama and members of the Drama Faculty and will take approximately 2½ - 3 hours.

Students will be assessed on:

  • collaboration
  • self-discipline/concentration and focus
  • physical and vocal performance skills
  • adaptability to characterise appropriately in various contexts
  • creativity and imagination
  • proficiency in script work
  • appropriate use of space

Performance Requirement

Students will also be required to prepare a short monologue (approximately 2 minutes) as part of the audition process. Pieces can be from:

  • plays
  • collection of monologues
  • adapted from other sources (eg: poetry, storytelling, novels etc) and be in any performance style

The monologue should be a fully realised performance and students must not refer to any scripts. Costumes are not expected however, if absolutely necessary small props are allowed.


Applicants should wear comfortable clothing, Footwear should be track shoes or bare feet.


  • Eight (8) passport size photographs will be required on the day of the audition to assist the audition panel identify the applicant in the audition.  Failure to supply photographs can seriously disadvantage the applicant in the audition.
  • Each photo should have the applicant’s name and date of birth clearly printed on the back.
